Granadino teacher receives a great homage in Madrid
Pepe was born in Granada in 1944, and will receive a tribute in Madrid on 11, 12 and 13 October, on the occasion of his 60 years developing his talent in flamenco art (Teatro Circo Price). Sixty years of dedication to flamenco guitar, fundamentally accompanying the singing of the best, from Caracol to Camarón or Enrique Morente.
Pepe Habichuela is grandson, son, brother and father of flamenco artists ─ especially dedicated to the guitar─. At twelve he asked his father to buy a guitar to take something home, “because I was very hungry.”
And with it on his shoulder he went to the caves of Sacromonte to make their first steps and learn on the march, while contributing to the economy family . There he spent his first years as a singer, accompanying singing and dancing, until at the beginning of the sixties emigrated to Madrid, the tablaos, where at that time were “the best.”
The list of artists that will be in the Price is very broad, and brings together the latest promotions of artists, all subsequent to his. Some are very young.
They will be from the three brothers Morente (Estrella, Soleá and Kiki) to Poveda, Arcángel, Niña Pastori, Tomatito, Mercé, José the French, Farruquito, among others. Also his son and nephews, conforming again the mythical group Ketama, that for years renewed the airs of flamenco and music in general.
In fact, the teacher Habichuela has lately touched with some of these young people of whom he assures that he learns a lot. He has also collaborated with jazz musicians and other sources.
